monumental controversy

A CNN pundit suggested recently that Mount Rushmore would be more acceptable to Cancel Culture activists if Barack Obama's face was added to the sculpture. This suggestion contains a glimmer of genius. If the majority can accept Obama's shortcomings as a black president then maybe the statue bashers can excuse the failings of Washington and Jefferson. The down-side is that the accomplishments of modern presidents cannot compare to those of the four already immortalised on the landmark. If they want to include Obama why don't they put Clinton up there while they're at it? Hell, why not Dubya and Nixon too? It's easy to imagine Washington having the grace to suffer that extended array, but Jefferson's ghost would probably demand his image be chipped off and shipped back to Monticello. If the presidential qualification was relaxed, Justice Clarence Thomas would be more deserving of inclusion, if only by virtue of his his dissent in Department of Homeland Security v. Regents of the University of California. Failing that, even if his likeness had the White Chicks glow sticks and whistle, it would be better to have Terry Crews represented there than Obama.
